Marine Corps Orders 12 Amphibious Mission Master Robotic Vehicles

The U.S. Marine Corps is expanding its use of autonomous ground vehicles with the purchase of 12 Mission Master SP robotic vehicles and five amphibious conversion kits.

American Rheinmetall received a $7.28 million contract to manufacture and deliver the vehicles, Marine Kits, and related support equipment. The Defense Logistics Agency is handling the procurement through ADS Inc., which is serving as the prime contractor for the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory.

The new vehicles will be used for continued testing, operational evaluation, and experimentation as the Marine Corps develops new ways to move supplies, weapons, and equipment across dispersed battlefields.

Built for Amphibious Operations

The Mission Master SP is a compact, unmanned ground vehicle designed to operate alongside troops without requiring a driver aboard. It can be configured to carry supplies, surveillance equipment, weapons, or other mission-specific payloads.

The vehicles use Rheinmetall’s PATH autonomous navigation system, which allows them to follow troops, travel along planned routes, and maneuver with limited human control.

Five of the vehicles will receive the company’s Marine Kit, an upgrade developed for extended amphibious operations. The kit is intended to improve the vehicle’s ability to operate in water and move between ships, shorelines, and inland positions.

These capabilities are particularly important to the Marine Corps as it prepares for operations across islands, coastlines, and other areas where traditional supply vehicles may have difficulty operating.

Developed Through Years of Marine Testing

The latest Mission Master SP configuration is the result of more than four years of work between Rheinmetall and the Marine Corps.

Marines have tested earlier versions during field exercises, live-fire demonstrations, and operational experiments. Their feedback has helped refine the vehicle’s autonomous navigation, payload options, and performance in amphibious environments.

Twelve Mission Master systems have already been fielded in support of Fleet Marine Force operations. Previous testing has also included the integration of the Fieldranger remote weapon station, demonstrating the vehicle’s potential to perform armed missions while keeping Marines farther away from enemy fire.

American Rheinmetall CEO Matt Warnick described the new contract as an important milestone in the company’s relationship with the Marine Corps. He said the latest vehicle incorporates lessons learned through years of working directly with Marines.

Supporting Marines in Distributed Operations

Autonomous vehicles could play an increasingly important role in Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations, the Marine Corps concept for deploying small, mobile units across widely separated locations.

Those units must be able to move quickly while carrying ammunition, food, water, communications equipment, and other supplies. Unmanned vehicles could help shoulder that burden while reducing the number of Marines required to drive supply vehicles through dangerous areas.

Robotic vehicles could also be sent into locations exposed to enemy fire, mines, drones, or other threats. Although they do not eliminate the risks faced by Marines, they can reduce the amount of time personnel must spend performing hazardous transportation and reconnaissance missions.

Training and Support Included

The contract covers more than the delivery of the vehicles. It also includes engineering assistance, program management, logistics coordination, technical documentation, operator training, and acceptance testing.

American Rheinmetall will lead the work in the United States, with engineering and production support provided by Rheinmetall Canada, which originally developed the Mission Master family of vehicles.

The program also supports American Rheinmetall’s long-term plan to establish an Advanced Land Autonomy Center of Excellence in Maine. The proposed facility would eventually support PATH integration, vehicle production, maintenance, and lifecycle support in the United States.

The current order does not require an immediate expansion of that facility, but it could help lay the groundwork for future American production and workforce growth.

For the Marine Corps, the purchase represents another step toward determining how autonomous vehicles can support Marines in combat. The Mission Master SP will allow the service to continue testing robotic logistics, amphibious mobility, and unmanned weapon capabilities as it prepares for increasingly dispersed operations.
